What is DNS?
Brief Overview – Domain Name System
DNS is a TCP/IP name resolution system that translates host names to IP addresses. Domain Name System has a hierarchical structure and removes many structural difficulties associated with naming hosts on the Internet and large networks.
When you connect to a website, normally you would specify it by name e.g. www.pcreckoner.com. This is for your benefit, for a connection to be established the name specified must be translated to a IP address. Without name resolution browsing would be a much different experience.
