How to start your own blog with WordPress?
The goal of this article is to help you start your own blog, the right way, right now. In this tutorial I will show you step-by-step how to create your own blog in minutes. I will also tell you what hosting provider and what package i’m using for this website.
You can’t go wrong with WordPress. There are many blogging platforms to choose from but no one, in my opinion, come close to the freedom of WordPress.org
What is WordPress?
WordPress is a open-source content management system that are very customizable and allows you to create your own blog in minutes. Millions of websites are using WordPress. The blog your’re reading right now is created with WordPress. To install WordPress you are going to need a web host. There is a service available on wordpress.com which allows you to start a WordPress-based blog without a web host, but is much more limited than wordpress.org
WordPress.com & WordPess.org?
I’m not going to confuse you with the details. The main difference between the two is that with WordPress.org you host your own site and with WordPress.com web hosting is included. I highly recommend to host your own website. The downloaded version on WordPress.org gives you much more flexibility and control over your site.
What do you need?
- Domain name (the name of your website e.g. www.pcreckoner.com)
- Web Host (a service that allows you to make your website accessible on the internet)
There are a lot of good hosting providers to choose from, but I would definitely recommend Siteground. They make it very easy to install and manage WordPress. They have amazing speed technologies and excellent support. They are also one of the hosting companies recommended by WordPress.org
How to get a Hosting Account?
You want Speed, Uptime and Support…
Go to Siteground and click on Hosting > WordPress Hosting. Select your preferred plan and follow their simple instructions. There are 3 hosting packages to choose from; StartUp, GrowBig and GoGeek. The comparison chart will show you the features and difference between these packages.
I’m currently using the GrowBig package for my website and are 100% satisfied.
You can read the SiteGround GrowBig hosting review to get a better understanding why I joined SiteGround.

The appearance of you blog is controlled by themes and plugins. To find themes you can search through the WordPress directory. There are many free themes to choose from, but if your’re serious about blogging then it’s best getting a premium theme from the start. Where to find Premium themes?
Premium themes offer support more features and design options.
Install a free WordPress theme.
- Go to Appearance > Themes > Add New.
- Choose a theme and click on Install.
- Click on Activate or Preview.
If you’re not happy with the theme you can easily delete and try another theme. To delete a theme go to Appearance > Themes >Theme Details and click Delete.
Install a premium theme. (Recommended)
It is better to get a premium theme from the start, It will save you a lot of time and frustrations.
I would recommend AccessPress Themes. It is very important to get a theme with developer support and updated if necessary.
After you Purchased a theme, they will either email you the theme or give you the option to download it. Save the file on your computer and:
- Go to Appearance > Themes > Add New > Upload Theme
- Click on Choose File and select the ZIP file you downloaded..
- Activate the theme.
This may take a minute or two depending on the file size and your internet connection.
Customize your theme.
WordPress Live Theme Customizer
Now you can customize your theme with the WordPress build-in Customizer. Go to Appearance > Customize. On the left side you will see a sidebar with all the options and on the right side is a live preview of your site. Go through all the sections and get familiar with the layout, it is quit easy and self-explanatory.
Plugins allows you to add more features to your website. Go to Plugins > Add new. Search through the plugins and click on Install Now then Activate.
You can manage all installed plugins by going to the Plugins page.
