This article are for those who are serious about blogging and who want to start their journey right from the start.
The most important thing when creating your blog is that you need to host your own website. When you host your own website, you will have full control and flexibility. Stay away from the free and all-in-one solutions.
You want freedom and ultimate control over your website. This means you need two things: a Good hosting provider and WordPress.org
Don’t confuse WordPress.org with WordPress.com
A web host is simply a company that provides you with the storage, technologies and services necessary to make your website visible on the Internet.
What is WordPress?
WordPress is a open-source content management system that are very customizable and allows you to create your own blog in minutes. Millions of websites are using WordPress. The blog your’re reading right now was created with WordPress.org
WordPress.com & WordPess.org?
The main difference between the two is that with WordPress.org you host your own site and with WordPress.com web hosting is included. I highly recommend to host your own website. The downloaded version on WordPress.org gives you much more flexibility and control.
There are 4 things you need to create your blog.
1. Hosting account
Choosing the right host the first time will save you a lot of time and trouble. Speed, Up-time and Support are very important.
2. Domain name
The Domain name is the address of your website, e.g. pcreckoner.com
The average costs for a new domain name will be anything from $10 – 15 per year, depending on the registrar. With Bluehost you get a Free SSL and domain if you sign up for their hosting.
3. Blogging Platform
WordPress is the most popular CMS. You are going to use WordPress.org to create content and design your blog. If you sign up with Bluehost then WordPress will automatically be installed for you.
The appearance of your blog is controlled by themes and plugins. There are hundreds of free themes available in the WordPress directory, but I recommend you get a premium theme from the start.
Premium themes offer support, more features and design options. Its very important to get a good reliable theme that updates regularly and have developer support.
Let me show you how to set it all up:
This is a 3 step process: Your fist step is to sign up with a web host.
1 Hosting Account: Bluehost
2 Blogging Platform: WordPress.org
3 Premium Theme: StudioPress
Step: 1 How to sign up with Bluehost
Go to Bluehost and click on Get Started
Select a hosting plan that will work for you.
Now you can create your new domain name.
Create your account
Now you need to complete the Account Information Form.
Check the package information section. You can choose between 12, 24 or 36 Months.
Choose which of the package extras you need.
You can also enable these features on a later stage..
Now you can choose to pay via PayPal or Credit Card.
After your purchase is successful, you can setup your new account.
Click Create Account
Enter your Domain Name and create a password.
You created your new hosting account! Now you can login to your Bluehost Dashboard.
Take some time and get familiar with all the features and settings. Everything is fairly self-explanatory. If you are uncertain about something you can browse through the helpful Bluehost resource base. Bluehost also have excellent 24/7 support.
Bluehost helps you to install WordPress after the sign-up process, but if you skipped it then follow the instructions below.
Step 2: WordPress
If you already installed WordPress during the sign up, it will show up under My Sites. If you already installed WordPress then click here to skip this step, otherwise continue reading.
It is very easy to install WordPress. If you are logged in to Bluehost, go to My Sites, then click Create Site.
Give your new site a name and tagline and click Next.
Select the Domain you want to use and uncheck the plugins you don’t need.
WordPress will now be installed!
Login Method 1: To login to your WordPress site go to My Sites and click on Log into WordPress.
Login Method 2: You can also login using the URL. This usually looks like this: http://www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin
The WordPress Admin Area
After you logged in, you will see the default Dashboard screen. The Dashboard gives you an overview of whats happening on your site.
To view your website, hover your mouse cursor over your blog’s name and click on Visit Site.
This is the default Twenty Twenty theme, but you want to get serious so I’m going to help you find the best premium themes.
Coming Soon mode is currently active, meaning only you can see this page. This allows you to work on your site without the public seeing until you are finished. When you are ready to unveil your site, click on Coming Soon Active > Launch Site
Take some time and browse through all the sections. You will spend most of your time in the Posts section. Posts appear in reverse chronological order on your blog’s page. Posts also have a build in commenting feature that allows users to comment on topics. To create a post, simply click on Posts > Add new.
Now its time to make your blog look professional.
Step 3: Get a Premium Theme.
When I created my first website, the most difficult task for me was choosing a theme!
There are thousands of themes available to choose from. Making the right decision the first time will save you a lot of time and money.
You need a fast, secure, mobile friendly and stable solution with good support.
I recommend you use StudioPress themes. StudioPress is the creator of the Genesis framework.
The Genesis Framework is a very well designed structure that provides a secure and search-engine-optimized foundation.

Find and install your theme.
Here you can browse through all the available themes.
Find a theme that you like and click on See Details and Pricing.
Click on Live Demo to view the site. If you like what you see then click Buy Theme + Framework Package.
Now you will need to create your account and complete your purchase.
After you Purchased the theme, you will have the option to download it. Save the files to your computer.
Install Genesis and the Child theme.
Genesis and Child?
Genesis is the Framework with all the security, SEO and performance features. The child theme handles all the design and layout aspects of your site. One of the benefits of a child theme is that you can easily update a theme without losing your customizations.
1 Go to Appearance > Themes > Add Themes> Upload Theme.
2 Click on Choose File and select the Genesis ZIP file and click Install Now.
3 Click Return to Themes page, DO NOT activate it.
4 Again, click on Upload Theme > Choose file and select the StudioPress theme (the child theme) file and click Install Now.
5 Now you can Activate the child theme.
Congratulations!! You installed one of the best WordPress themes.
WordPress Live Theme Customizer
You can now customize your theme with the WordPress build-in Customizer. Go to Appearance > Customize. On the left side you will see a sidebar with all the options and on the right side is a live preview of your site. Go through all the sections and get familiar with the layout, it is quit easy and self-explanatory.

Lastly, don’t forget to enable your free SSL.
A SSL Certificate improves customer trust, protect your data and it may also give you better SEO rankings.
If you website is using a SSL, your URL will start with HTTPS instead of HTTP. Most browsers also display a “lock” icon.
Enable your Bluehost SSL
1 Log into your Bluehost Account.
2 Go to My Websites and Click Manage Site
3 Go to Security and enable Free SSL Certificate
It may take some time for the SSL to be installed. Give some time and test to see if the URL is working. If it is not working then you can contact Bluehost Support to help you resolve this.
